Here are just a few of the sports stories that we discuss in class. Many of them have a good moral to the story, a sad or powerful message and some are just for fun!
1/23/09- A Texas High School girl’s basketball team wins 100-0
In a recent game in Dallas Texas, a private Christian school (The Covenant) defeated Dallas Academy 100-0. The Christian school was leading 59-0 at halftime and still continued to shoot 3-pointers and also had a full-court press. Many of the parents and even the coach were cheering on the team as they approached the 100 point mark. The dean of the winning school requested a forfeit and apologized to Dallas Academy. 1/30/09- US Sprinter gives up Silver Medal
Shawn Crawford won the silver medal in the 200 meter sprint during the 2008 Summer Olympics due to two sprinters ahead of him being disqualified from the race. Crawford said that the two sprinters ahead of him stepped on their lane lines but did not interfere with anyone’s race. He felt that giving up his medal was fair and that the real 2nd place finisher deserved the medal. Read the full story here.
2/2/09- 2008 Olympic Hero Michael Phelps caught smoking marijuana
After Michael Phelps was photographed using marijuana, he apologized and said it would never happen again. Michael Phelps is only 23 years old and wants to have fun but there are certain responsibilities that come with being a well known role-model athlete. There will be many repercussions of Phelps’ bad judgement including the loss of many of his millions of dollars in endorsements and sponsors. UPDATE 2/5/09- Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months according to USA Swimming. Read story here.
